Firstly, study smart and not study hard. A lot of students make this mistake when they are studying for a major test or exam. The week before exam, ask your teacher or lecturer for the topics will come out for test in order to get yourself prepared. Give yourself ample time to study for a particular paper. The important key is to understand the topics and not just memorize it. By understanding it well, you will tend to remember it better.

Secondly, pack your bag. Make sure everything you need is in the bag. This includes stationery like pencil, eraser, ruler and sometimes calculator. It is better to pack the bag the day before so that you do not panic on the next day.

Thirdly, have sufficient sleep during the night. The night before exam, make sure you have enough sleep. Have at least eight hours of sleep. It is important so that your brain and body can function well the next day.

Fourth, eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal in our daily life but most people like to skip it. Many students tend to forget their breakfast in order not to be late for school. This happens to all and not only students because in the morning, people are rushing. However students cannot concentrate at class. Students also can think well when they have a full stomach. It help fuels the body to help provide energy for us to have problem solving abilities throughout the day.

Fifth, have some time management. Before starting to do the paper, look through the paper to get a rough impression on the paper. Read the instruction given to each question and the marks allocated for each question. Next, you can start answering the easier questions in order to save time. Look through the clock so that you do not exceed time on allocated time for each question. Write neatly and accordingly so that the teacher who marks your answer sheet can see properly. When you are completed with the answer, check your answer to make sure you are satisfied with all the answer given.

To Understand Or to Memorize?

To reduce the need of memorizing a bunch of seemingly arbitrary facts, you should understand how something can work. Memory is a fundamental tool for human learning. It is encouraged for children to develop their skills to memorize even during their toddler years. However, true learning is not only memorized and expresses their ideas with memorization; they should demonstrate the ability to refine their ideas through communication with others.

If you memorize something, you are bound to forget, but if you truly understand something, you will take it to the grave and remember forever. Understanding is alike memory in that you can rehearse the information. However with understanding, you know the information in a way that allows us to use it in different ways. The simplest example is where you have memorized a shape and can see it in your mind, and that’s it. With understanding that shape, you are able to rotate it in your mind and see it from different angles. This is really what separates you from understanding and memorization. You can apply ideas to real life situations or case studies if you truly understand.

Memorization is difficult to apply ideas in real-life situations or case studies. Ideas are just as essential to the learning process as are facts. Ideas are important because they represent how different people observe the world.

And that’s where understanding comes in. If you manage to understand a topic, you can still reconstruct it if you are missing some details. However with memorizing, if you lose some details, you lose everything. If you strive to understand, you can solve problems even when numbers or components are changed.

Memorization is not a pure educational philosophy. Memorization should be applied in such a way as to exclude or trump the teaching of understanding. Both working together are key components to building knowledge. The bottom-line, as I see it, is that memorized knowledge can or likely should be part of your foundation or basic. But, it will only get you to not so far. It’s the ability to really understand something and how it works that will help you solve issues that just aren’t solvable with memorized facts alone.

We are all aware how a person feels prior to an Interview, say for a job or a promotion, etc. The stress and tension about a possible failure in the interview affects his performance at the interview. Hence it is absolutely essential to keep your mind cool and free of tension. Well it is easily said than done. Here are some tips to ensure that you do not get worked up and remain cool to give your Interview.

1. By asking you to tell about yourself the Interviewer is looking for clues on your upbringing, ambitions, passion, leadership qualities, team playing etc. Do not talk about your high scores or academic achievements only because he has all the information he needs from your certificates already. Talk about your sincerity, favourite subject and what you would like to be, your activities in various forums during college and the roles you played in organizing the activities, projects/assignments which you completed successfully well ahead of time etc.

2. While he will be happy to hear about your strengths he will be looking more anxiously to hear about your weaknesses. While your identification of the weakness indicates your ability for introspection, a good quality, your further elucidation as to how you ensured that it did not affect your performance is what he is really interested in. Hence do explain how you got over the weakness.

3. He expects you to have clear knowledge about the job you have applied for, what it entails and how you are a perfect match for it. Hence do make a research to know the requirements of the job and make a note of how your qualification and skill set are a perfect match for the same, prior to the Interview.

Do not interrupt when the Interviewer is speaking to you. By listening to him fully you may gain valuable information about the job, organization etc which you can ill afford to ignore. Should you have some small deficiency in qualification, which you intend to acquire soon, be honest in admitting it and assure how you propose to acquire the same. This would build trust.

Never ever go late for your Interview. Get the details of topography, a day earlier if need be, and be there on time. No one likes a late comer however brilliant he may be.

While you should answer all the questions confidently, do not be flippant. If you do not understand the question please ask him to repeat respectfully and do not be shy to say you do not know when you cannot answer. It is better than exposing your ignorance by attempting a guess.

Please go neatly dressed! I am not saying that you should always wear a three piece suit. At least make sure you do not look clumsy with a crumpled shirt or pant.

Last but not least do spend some time in revising your academic information to recollect the important things relating to the job in question and a couple of very good references who would vouch for your knowledge, experience and integrity.

The importance of skills in the new economy is growing. In fact, almost all industrial sectors are increasingly knowledge-based and economic returns are acquired from a range of ‘intangible’ outputs, one of which is a worker’s skills.

Employers are looking for a specific set of skills from job seekers. These skills correspond with those needed to perform a particular job. Beyond these job specific skills, there are other universally sought after skills. The good news is that these are skills you probably possess. The even better news is that you can garner and improve these skills through training and professional development.

What are Employability Skills?

Employability skills are defined as “skills required not only to gain employment but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions”.

How many of these skills do you possess? The answer is most likely, “many”. You can upgrade these skills by following these simple steps.

  1. Do a thorough self-assessment. Consider whether you need additional training or education.
  2. Take responsibility for acquiring and upgrading these skills.
  3. Seek support from your employer.
  4. Look for training programs and schools to meet your needs.

The Australian education and training system appears well placed to meet the demand for high skills in the new economy. Because there are many reputable vocational, correspondence and business colleges you can enroll in to upgrade your skills, you are spoilt for choice. Before enrolling in a school, do some homework. Here’s how:

  • Compare programs: Study the information from various schools to learn what business courses are offered and what is required to graduate. Compare the costs of these programs. Are books and equipment included in the overall fee?
  • Find out about the school’s facilities: Visit the school and ask about its facilities. Check if the school’s equipment (for e.g. computers, software, lab tools) is adequate for training.

Employability skills are critical tools and traits that will enable you to succeed in the workplace.
