Science Lab Equipment Makes Learning Science Fun by Adriana N.

Getting your children to become interested in science is often a difficult task. With the use of kid friendly science lab equipment and some easy projects the kids will be begging to do more science oriented projects. And will soon be searching ideas of their own unique ways to implement science into fun.

Parents have difficulty with science sometimes as much as their children do. They have the idea that it takes rocket science degrees to become science oriented. The following projects are super easy and fun. They will get your kids not only having fun with science but eager to do more.

This first project is great for teaching things such as how stuff grows, the process involved and the end results with a lot of indiscreet learning in between. As you complete each step explain the process in kid friendly terms and encourage them to ask questions. Both projects are only four easy steps but packed with information.

For step one, purchase some science lab equipment like inexpensive sponges. The sea sponges that are used for crafts and painting work great because you can give explanations about where they come from. Use a microscope to let them view what the sponge looks like dry and wet. If using cellos sponges the kids can cut shapes from the square sponge. Use this as an opportunity to learn geometry.

Step two teaches why water is needed for growing food and plants. Soak the sponge and place in a baggies that has been filled with seeds of your choice. Roll the sponge around in the bag until it is covered with seeds.

Step three: tie a piece of string around the sponge or if preferred feed string through a hole in the sponge. Hang the seed covered sponge in an area that will provide lots of sunlight. In a week or less there will sprouts forming on the sponge.

Step four will teach them how to care for the plant and the result of caring for them. When sprouts have begun, remove string and place in a clay pot that has been half filled with potting soil. Sprinkle soil over the sponge and put in a sunny area until fully grown.

Parents and kids of any age love to do this next project which is a lava lamp of sorts without the light. To start fill a jar with two cups of water and few drops of food coloring. Stir will and set aside. This will teach your children how to use measurement and mixing.

Step two is adding the oil. Measure a half of cup of vegetable and pour into the jar of colored water. Allow to sit for a few minutes so the oil will separate from the water.

In the third step kids learn about weight and gravity. Without shifting the jar pour a teaspoon of salt directly in the jar. When the salt lands on the oil it will form some clumps. The clumps will begin to sink due to the weight.

Step four encourages the learning of movement, gravity and separation. After the clumps reach the bottom the salt will start dissolve and cause the oil to float back to the top. Each time you want to sink the oil, just add salt.

Science is fun for parents and children. It encourages children to ask questions and look up the answers with their parents. The more gadgets kids have the more interest they have in using them. For gifts opt for microscopes and other science lab equipment to encourage learning science.

Since 1970, the premier retailer for science lab equipment offers a wide variety of resources to young aspiring scientists. Children can immerse themselves in the wonders of kids science with these fun and educational science toys.

What’s the Difference Between TEFL Certificate and Diploma Courses?

What’s the Difference Between TEFL Certificate and Diploma Courses? by Honor Baldry

There are basically two types of initial TEFL training - taking a weekend certificate course plus optional add-on modules or taking a longer intensive 4-week course. After qualifying and gaining at least one year’s (preferably two years’) experience, you will have the chance to extend your qualifications by taking a diploma course. There are also online TEFL courses, but these are not discussed here. Please search on the main menu for information about these. Below are some typical details about each type of face-to-face TEFL course to help you understand the comparison more fully.

20-hour Weekend Certificate courses

* Great if you want to travel on a gap year to teach abroad.
* Helpful if you aren’t sure how much of your life you want to commit to TEFL teaching
* A good taster to give you an idea if are suited to teaching.
* Represent superb value for money and a relatively short time investment

A school expects a teacher with this qualification to:

* Need some support in their first job
* Be able to plan lessons on their own after some initial help in the first few weeks
* Deliver fun, interesting and informative lessons

However, they don’t expect you to know everything and will probably be very understanding if you make mistakes initially.

Many schools abroad and some in the UK accept teachers with this type of training. Various agencies, for example Cactus or i-to-i [see below] offer training courses and can find teaching placements abroad for you. Some of these schools will also ask that you have a Bachelor’s degree in any subject, but many well accept teachers who have no additional qualification.

There is no formal exam at the end, but it is still possible to fail this type of course depending on the tutor’s assessment of your capability and suitability. Assuming you pass, you will have a good launch pad from which to start teaching and you will gain experience very quickly in your first job.

Course content includes all the basics on a Trinity or Cambridge Certificate course (see below) but in slightly less detail. All lesson teaching and observation tends to be done with peers rather than with foreign students. In addition, time constraints mean that you will probably finish the course without having taught a whole lesson. All the same, you will have had several opportunities to stand in front of others and present some new language to the class. You are likely to get some practice at organising the class and setting up activities. Many tutees decide to take extra qualifications alongside a practical weekend training course. In fact, companies such as i-to-i offer further certificates in a variety of subjects such as grammar, teaching large classes, teaching with limited materials and so on.

Is it worth it? Yes - many people gain enough insight into the teaching process to lead happy and successful lives as TEFL teachers, especially abroad, following this type of course.

http://www.i-to-i.com

http://www.tefltraining.co.uk
4 or 5-week certificate courses (Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate in TESOL)

* Great if you want to find a more permanent job teaching in the UK or worldwide
* Helpful for those who feel more certain that TEFL teaching is a career they want to pursue.
* Represent a greater financial and time commitment, but give an excellent grounding for someone who is serious about TEFL teaching as a longer-term career move.

A number of schools abroad and every British Council-accredited school in the UK require one of these certificates in order to take on contracted staff. As above, some of these schools will also ask that you have a Bachelor’s degree in any subject, but many will accept teachers who have no additional qualification.

The courses feature assessed teaching practices and a short written examination at the end. Whilst it is still possible to pass this type of course if you fail one or two teaching practice assessments, you will still have to satisfy an external moderator or examiner of your suitability to teach at the end of the course. As in the weekend course, the majority of trainees pass, and one reason for this is that they have to pass a suitability interview before being accepted onto the course in the first place.

A language school will have very similar expectations for people who had either type of training. Schools realise that this type of training will be enhanced by the actual practice of teaching classes on a regular basis. They are very likely to offer a good level of support to the novice teacher. The price and time commitment required is considerably higher than weekend courses, but you will have the opportunity to teach real language students as part of the training and you will be expected to complete a total of 6 hours of teaching practice prior to qualification.

Cambridge RSA DELTA and Trinity Licentiate Diploma in TESOL

* Great if you have several years of TEFL teaching under your belt and you want to further your career, perhaps aiming to earn promotion or take on more responsibility at work.

* Helpful for honing your teaching skills further and gaining much greater insight into why you do what you do as a teacher.

* Knowledge, understanding, and competency level is expected to be much greater. A diploma teacher should be capable of taking some responsibility at the school and is expected to produce well-designed and effective lessons as a matter of course.

In the UK and abroad, schools with British Council accreditation are required to have a certain proportion of Diploma-qualified teachers on their permanent staff. You may like to follow the link below to learn more about this process.

http://www.britishcouncil.org/accreditation.htm

Passing at Diploma level isn’t straightforward, so the failure rate is far higher than at certificate level, but many teachers do manage to pass first time around! There are assessed and observed lessons to be taught, plus assignments and written examinations to do. Some teachers choose to do their Diploma part-time or by distance, alongside a regular teaching job. This is a very helpful way of charting your progress, as you are working with your normal classes as part of the process. It may take the best part of a year to become qualified in this way or you could search for an intensive 10-week course and do it full-time. A typical language school obviously has much greater expectations of a Diploma-qualified teacher.

A lesson attaining diploma level should feature the following attributes:

* have very clear aims and objectives, both overall and stage-by-stage
* be timed reasonably accurately so that stages are not missed unless it is justifiable
* include features of pronunciation training being clearly demonstrated and understood
* have motivating, engaging and interesting materials
* be very communicative and interactive
* ensure plenty of productive Student Talking Time with appropriate correction techniques
* be appropriately self-evaluated by the teacher afterwards to demonstrate an understanding of the learning that occurred and why any problems may have been encountered.

Is it worth doing a Diploma? If you are serious about teaching longer term and want a greater chance of promotion or job security, then the answer is a resounding “yes”. Doing a Diploma is hard work, but very interesting. It will help the experienced teacher to shake off any unhelpful habits they may have acquired since initial TEFL training and will bring new confidence and assurance to their teaching style.
Summary

All of these courses are designed to ensure that the TEFL teacher is equipped to pass on knowledge in an interesting and informative way to their learners. Each course requires time, money and commitment in order to pass with flying colours. Each course will ensure that the teacher is able to evaluate their own performance and think how future lessons might be improved upon. If you are just dipping your toes in to test the water, go for the Weekend Course. If you are certain teaching is for you and that you definitely want to work at a private language school in the UK, go for a CELTA or Trinity Certificate in TESOL. If you have an initial training qualification already and some teaching experience behind you, then why not take the next step and consider doing a Diploma? Getting appropriate training is empowering for the teacher and an incredibly rewarding and interesting experience in itself.

Simple Methods on VOIP Installation

Filed under: Technology & Computers — admin @ 5:16 am

Simple Methods on VOIP Installation by Ray Scotlander

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is the general term for transmitting voice over the use of Internet Protocol networks or the Internet. Some general terms for VoIP are the telephony, voice over broadband, internet telephony, and broadband telephony. The VoIP system is the employment of session control protocols that encode audio codecs and allow transmission of voice over the network that handle audio communication.

VoIP services are considered one of the Internet’s contributions to our widespread technology that has widened the use of telephone services with the use of the world wide network. These services offer more security and better services than the standard telephone calls that go over the landlines. Calls are made by just making commands from your computer and these commands will pass the servers located on different parts of the world until the request reach a call center and patch your call through the receiving end of the network.

The benefits of instant messaging gave way to VoIP which has become a social tool for business professionals and to people who want to get in touch through voice calls instantly. So if you want to have the advantage of using VoIP then you need a VoIP Installation tutorial to help you talk to people without paying so much unlike landline calls. Actually you do not need to exert so much effort in establishing a VoIP in your computer. Sometimes all you need to do is install an instant chat messaging system, plug the headset and microphone and you are ready to chat online. But sometimes it does not work as simply as it should and you need to check on the availability of your resources in order to establish voice connection. If you want a worry-free and more secured chat with your friends and family then you will need a VoIP set that can be delivered to you by your landline or Internet service provider.

First, you have to have the following devices which are the major types of devices you need for your Internet connection.

1. Cable broadband. If you do not have a DSL connection then you can use a cable broadband with a cable modem. Your cable broadband provider must provide you with efficient and continuous signals all the time so that you can instantly hook on the internet anytime of the day,

2. or a Digital Subscribe Line (DSL) modem/router or a DSL broadband with hi-speed access to the web; and

3. A computer that has a processor with at least 1.5 GHz

If you have all these and there is no problem with your land line phone service or broadband accessibility then VoIP installation would not be a problem. You only have to sign for the service you want on the website and the service provider can send you VoIP adapter directly to your home. VoIP adapters are always accompanied with easy instructions for the set up and there are no tools or sometimes software to install. You just need to find your computer’s connection ports and connect them to your VoIP adapters.

After everything has been set up, you can dial the activation phone number that comes along with your adapter, follow the instructions and enter the activation code. The activation code can be sent to you through your email provided by your internet service provider. When your account is activated then you are on your way to chat and make a live talk over the Internet.

How to Evaluate Your Business Need for Data Deduplication.

How to Evaluate Your Business Need for Data Deduplication. by SEPATON06 SEPATON06

The volume of data generated by companies today is growing explosively. More powerful computing technology and the evolution to an information-based economy are causing companies to generate more data than ever before. To deal with this overwhelming data growth and related storage requirements, many companies are evaluating the use of data deduplication technology.

By simple definition, data deduplication technology is software that compares data in new backup streams to data that has already been stored to identify and remove duplicates. Today, deduplication has become an essential tool in helping data managers to control exponential data growth in the backup environment. However, the methods used to accomplish data deduplication vary widely as do the levels of capacity optimization they can provide. For example, virtual tape libraries provide a level of performance and reliability that traditional physical tape systems cannot approximate. VTLs enable companies to back up data many times faster than tape, restore data quickly and eliminate a variety of time-consuming manual tasks. However, without data deduplication, the cost of disk is higher than that of tape, forcing companies to use disk space carefully by keeping online retention times short and moving data to tape archive as quickly as possible.

To truly understand data deduplication, it’s vital to understand the differing approaches to data deduplication. There are two general ways that deduplication technologies operate— hash-based comparison and the ContentAware™ comparison method used in the SEPATON DeltaStor® deduplication software on an S2100®-ES2 virtual tape library (VTL).

The hash-based approach runs incoming data through an algorithm that assigns a unique number (called a hash) to every chunk of data. It then compares the new hashes to those that have already been stored in a lookup table. If the new hash does not match, then it stores the corresponding chunk of data and adds the new hash to the lookup table. If the new hash does match one in the lookup table, it does not write the corresponding data to disk and records the duplicate in the hash table so that the data can be reconstituted for restores.

Meanwhile, the ContentAware approach reads the data that is in the backup and identifies commonalities and relationships between the objects/documents (e.g., Microsoft® Word document to Word document or Oracle® database to Oracle database) to narrow the search for duplicates. It then compares data in these objects at the byte level for maximum capacity reduction.

As described above, hash-based technologies start by breaking data into chunks and assigning a number to each chunk called a hash. New data is stored, and duplicate data is simply recorded in a “use count” tally. Each new backup gets broken up into more pieces that have to be identified, compiled and reassembled to restore. As a result, the more data stored on the system, the more pieces you generate. In contrast, the ContentAware approach uses the most recent (newest) backup as the reference data set. It compares data stored previously to this reference data set to identify duplicates.

Another distinction between deduplication technologies is whether they deduplicate a given backup set inline as part of the backup process or concurrently with the backup process. Inline deduplication aligns well with hash-based comparison technologies and provides a cost-effective way for small to medium-sized organizations to reduce their data center capacity needs. The concurrent method begins the deduplication process as the first backup job completes. It has several distinct advantages for larger backup volumes. With it, the VTL can load balance the backup and deduplication processes across multiple nodes, enabling it to complete both processes faster than an inline system. It also stores the most recent backup in its intact form, enabling it to perform a data integrity check before any duplicate data is replaced with pointers.

Many deduplication technologies cannot scale backup performance or deduplication processing across multiple processing nodes. As a result, you have to add multiple individually-managed boxes (see capacity scalability above), or tolerate significantly slower backup times. With the Scale-Out Deduplication™ capability of a SEPATON VTL with DeltaStor software, you can add capacity or performance to backup and deduplicate petabytes of data in a single system.

It’s important to note that most deduplication technologies are “all or nothing,” requiring you to deduplicate all of your backup data and to do so with the same algorithm. This method is adequate for small backup environments. However, in an enterprise, being able to fine-tune deduplication to your needs, data types and business objectives is essential. The efficiencies to be gained through deduplication depend on a number of factors, including (but not limited to):

• The amount of duplicate data in the backup stream

• The data application type (Exchange, Oracle, Word, etc.)

• The required online data retention period—longer retention times result in greater deduplication efficiency

• The number of times per week that full backups are performed

When considering a data deduplication solution for your business, be sure to evaluate how each potential solution meets your needs, which may include:

•Backup Performance and Time to Protection - Be sure to understand how a data deduplication technology will affect your backup and how quickly your data will be moved to the protection of a VTL. If you have full backups of more than 10 TB, you should consider an enterprise-optimized deduplication technology like DeltaStor® software.

•Restore Performance - Choose a technology based on three key characteristics of your file restore needs: how often you need to restore files; the age of the files you typically restore (e.g., how often are files more than 30 days old) and how quickly you need to complete file restores. If restore time is a priority for you, choose a system that uses forward differencing to ensure that restores can be performed instantly, without “reconstitution”.

•Deduplication Efficiency - It makes sense that the more duplicate data you have in your backup stream, the more beneficial a deduplication technology will be in your environment. Understand what level of deduplication efficiency is realistic in your environment and whether that is sufficient to offset your data growth.

•Risk to Data Integrity -Consider a solution that keeps an intact copy of your most recent backup and performs a second-level data integrity check .

•Capacity and Performance Scalability - Before choosing a technology, understand the implications of outgrowing your capacity and performance. Will adding capacity and performance mean maintaining numerous “silos of storage” or require a forklift upgrade to a new system?

How to Use Characters in Your Subject to Make Statements Clearer

How to Use Characters in Your Subject to Make Statements Clearer by Jane Sumerset

As you may already know, the choice and use of particular words and phrases can have a serious effect on the overall quality of your writing. All of us are aware about that matter. The only problem is how to make things straight and avoid it with all cost.

Sometimes, ideas that are flowing down in your mind are really helpful in your part when you are unto writing. It may provide your content enough words and better concept structure once you can organize certain information properly.

The sad thing is you might not notice that there are also a lot of mistakes that are not visible and obvious when you are trying to check and read them out. Particularly, when it is all about grammar structuring. This situation happens most of the time and some writers will even skip this matter gradually.

But to make your writings a better one, you need to check thoroughly every sentence you have. This is to avoid any unwanted results after you submit your own writings.

One particular form of this that you can easily avoid is the use of main clauses with an inanimate subject.

Basically, we’re referring to a main clause that includes no people in the statement, focusing instead on either an object or a concept. While this type of writing isn’t always wrong, it can be a particularly problematic error that leads to confusing writing.

There are a lot of articles and other forms or writing where this situation is normally used. It can be inappropriate for some reason since it be hard in your part to convince your readers about the topic you have since they haven’t understand it well.

Anytime you can have people involved in any particular statement, always make sure to include them. This is as crucial a component of clear writing, as it is to use the best grammar software available. You can see this specific technique used heavily in well-written blogs, which try to humanize topics by adding a human element even to technical subjects.

In technical, academic and formal writing, using main clauses that have inanimate subjects is usually allowed. However, only use them when actual people can’t be substituted for the subject, such as when discussing mathematical concepts or business statistics.

For other forms of writing where people are involved directly, refusing to use them in your subject clutters your meaning – which is why you often see the technique done in political speeches that try to evade discussing certain matters in a clear manner.

Need samples? Take a look at these sentences and see how clearly they manage to relay their message, by simply “personalizing” the subject.

Vague: Bombings were held in the capital this morning.
Clear: Insurgents bombed the capital this morning.

Vague: Homes around the neighborhood were foreclosed.
Clear: Banks foreclosed many homes in the neighborhood.

Have you encountered writing every sentence in that kind of manner? See how it confuses your thought without making your whole sentence complete? That’s the same way your readers will feel if you keep on writing statements that are not clear and complete.
