Why Writers Should Take Acting Classes

Why Writers Should Take Acting Classes
By Jacob Krueger

It’s no wonder that some of the greatest writers began their careers as actors.

The art of writing and acting have always been profoundly intertwined. All of the greatest writers have had an instinctual understanding of the actors craft, the ability to create a character, to play with and against text, and to shape a journey over the course of a play or movie.

And every great actor has an instinctive understanding of a writer’s craft as well: the ability to cultivate a compelling arc for a character, by exploring the dramatic structure and the conscious and unconscious desires that lie underneath the text.

Dramatic writing could not exist without acting. And acting could not exist without dramatic writing. Yet strangely, these interrelated fields are often taught as if they were separate disciplines, with actors receiving little training in writing, and writers receiving even less training in acting.

As any of you who have taken my classes know, for precisely this reason I’ve always integrated acting concepts into my writing classes.

I believe writers should learn how an actor approaches a play or screenplay, and even have the experience of physically inhabiting a character, giving them perspective that will forever change the way they see both writing and acting.

For instance, what is character from an actor’s perspective? And how can that help you as a writer?

As writers, we are often seduced by “characteristics” when we try to create character. But these characteristics do not make a character Why? As any trained actor will tell you, the reason for this is simple. Characters are not adjectives. Characters are verbs. And these verbs begin with a want.

When a any actor worth his or her salt looks at a screenplay, that’s the question they’re asking - and that is what the screenwriter should be asking as well. Because once you know what your character wants, you know who that character is.. The want affects the way characters speak, act, dress, choose, love, hate lie, cheat, whatever. It is the unique way that they do these things that distinguish these people from anyone else in the world, that make individual characters.

Let your character pursue the want on the page, and all the other aspects of his or her personality will reveal themselves to you. And when you crack that shell open, you’ll have all kinds of deliciousness to enjoy.

This is just one example of how writers can use an actor’s approach to think about their characters to not only help them discover the qualities that differentiate a character, but also point toward the structural moments to which the plot must build.

For this and many other reasons, I’m offering a brand new class, which will allow you to experience screenwriting from the other side of the page. Striving For Quality As a Writer

Striving For Quality As a Writer
By Andrew M. Miller

Have you always wanted to be a better writer? Writing is a skill that can improve the more you do it. There are ways to take you to the next level quickly, however.

It’s important to write about what you know. Being familiar with the topic will make you more at ease as you write. You will be able to write with authority and feel good about it.

Strive for originality. Seek out subjects that haven’t been covered at great length. It always helps to look at subjects from different angles. That will help you present the material in a fresh way and be of interest to readers.

People will be more likely to read your work if you present a fresh perspective. If it is a subject that has been written about extensively, you work may stand out as a result.

Proper grammar is a must. Readers have little patience for shoddy text. No one wants to wade through multiple misspellings and grammatical errors. It looks bad and undermines your credibility as a writer. Use spell check.

If you can’t express yourself well, no one will take the time to read what you have written. A good grasp of grammar and spelling is the minimum skill level a writer needs to succeed.

Seek advice from others in the field. There are a lot of skilled writers who are willing to share what they’ve learned over the years, with you. Seek out experienced writers and ask them questions. No doubt many will enjoy mentoring a new writer.

How do they come up with their story ideas? What type of research do they do to prepare to write an article? What are the most important skills to a professional writer? Those are some questions you may want to ask. It may also be helpful to see if they will critique your work.

Read extensively. Reading other writer’s work will expose you to different writing styles and skill levels. It will help you improve your own writing and develop your voice.

The Making Of A French-style Shopping Basket

The Making Of A French-Style Shopping Basket by Ms. Amanda T Smith

In a world that has had enough of environmental pollution and is trying to find ways to reduce the consumption of plastic, the French-Style shopping basket is fast becoming a promising solution. These baskets are made from natural materials and hence are not harmful to the environment. They are biodegradable and can also be re-used numerous times before they have to be discarded.

A French-Style shopping basket makes use of natural substances like palm leaves. Though these baskets are called “French” baskets, they are not necessarily made in France. They can be manufactured anywhere in the world. Most people prefer the baskets that are handmade because the mass-produced, factory manufactured French baskets are not as sturdy as the handmade ones. The French baskets handmade in Morocco, also called “Medina baskets”, are extremely popular owing to the calibre of work, the superior treatment given to the baskets and the high quality of the end product.

The French-Style shopping basket uses palm leaves available locally. Most commonly used leaves are from a particular palm called Nipa palm. The leaves of this palm are long and feathery and suitable for basket weaving. The leaves are strong at the same time they are also highly flexible when slightly wet. Once dried, these leaves harden to give a tough basket that lasts a long time. These are the same leaves that are used in roofs for thatching. The leaves that are selected for making French baskets are slightly green and not completely mature. These types of leaves are easier to work with. The leaves are also soaked in water for some time to make them bendable.

With a little patience and a lot of hard work, the French-Style shopping basket can be made at home too. Collect palm leaves that are approximately similar in size and cut them into equal-sized fronds. Now cut 10 of these fronds lengthwise into equal halves. Tape edges of 7 other fronds to a surface, after you place them next to each other. Start weaving the fronds from the first pile with the ones that are pasted to the surface. Now you will have a mat. Now make the walls of the basket with more fronds and glue them to the basket. These walls will be of smaller size and can be secured to the basket with smaller sized strips that are pasted to the basket. You can also opt for handles in the basket by following the same process.

For coloured French-Style shopping basket, the palm leaves are coloured beforehand. While following the traditional pattern, natural dyes are used most of the time. However, these days a lot of experimentation is being done with artificial, environment-friendly colours. Sometimes these baskets have leather handles. In such cases, the leather is usually cow or goat and the procedure of leather dyeing follows traditional process. These baskets are rarely dried in factories or by artificial methods. More often, sun drying is opted. This makes the baskets stronger. As the entire method of making a French-Style shopping basket is natural, the production of these baskets is dependent on elements of nature like weather to a large extent.

How to Choose a Good Self Storage Facility

How to Choose a Good Self Storage Facility

By Laura Stephens

A self-storage facility is an ideal place to keep your belongings. Everyone wants to keep his or her possessions somewhere where they are safe and well protected. Of course, you cannot just settle for the first storage unit that you come across. It is important that you choose a good facility. Here are some things you should take into consideration:

1.Identify your needs.

If you’re looking for extra space to store your belongings, the first thing you have to do is identify your needs. Identify how much storage space you will need for your items. How long do you think you’ll be storing these items? Knowing these details will make your search a lot simpler. You’ll have an easier time asking for quotations for different units because you know what you are looking for.

2.Think about the location.

If you think you’ll need to access your items frequently, then store your belongings in a place that is easily accessible. You’ll probably want to look for a self-storage facility that is near your house or office.

Also, take a look at the general area of the storage facility. Is it in a good neighbourhood? Make sure it is located in an area that makes you feel safe and secure.

3.Work within your budget.

Self-storage units are priced differently. Shop around before deciding on a particular unit. Scouting different storage facilities will help give you an overview of the average rate. You’ll be able to know if a unit is overpriced or if it is a great bargain.

If your budget is a major factor in your decision, also consider the unit’s location. If the storage facility is inexpensive but is located far away, then you’ll need to factor in your transportation expenses to see if it is worth it. Of course, you’ll also need to think about your travel time.

4.Ask about security measures.

As mentioned earlier, you want to keep your belongings in a place where they are safe. Find out if the units are patrolled on a regular basis. Find out if the area is lit well and if there is video surveillance. Also ask if you need to provide your own locks for your unit or if you will be provided with them.

5.Ask about the hours of operation.

Not all self-storage facilities are accessible 24 hours a day. Certain storage units are only accessible at certain hours of certain days. To be on the safe side, look for a storage facility that has flexible operating hours.

6.Take the climate into consideration.

What goods will you be storing? Some items need to be stored at a warm temperature, whilst other things need to be stored at a cool temperature. Find out if a unit is climate-controlled or not.

7.Read online reviews.

Conduct a quick search on Google or Yahoo on storage facilities you are considering. People like to post both positive and negative comments of products or services that they’ve tried. You may be able to find reviews that may be able to help you with your decision.
